2017 Tours Review

What we did in 2017

New Zealand Tour – February This 24-day tour started and finished at Christchurch NZ. Travelling in summer the weather was warm and our route initially took us north along the coast to the Marlborough wine region for a three-night stay. We then travelled down the rugged west coast through Nelson and Greymouth to the Southern Alps and the Fox Glacier before a 4-night stop at Queenstown to recharge. Then on to Milford Sound heading further south then back north to Mt Cook in the Alps and then to the east coast at Dunedin before following the east coast north back to Christchurch. I know that I can say that the tour far exceeded our and the group expectations. So much so that we are repeating the tour in February 2019, a few places left.

Peak District Tour – April Our Peak tour was based at one of our favourite hotels – the Izaak Walton at Dovedale. the tour was comprised of contrasting natural beauty, with moors and dales, rivers, springs and caverns and at its heart the Peak District National Park, a visit to Chatsworth House, and the ‘Pipes in the Peaks’ – a classic car collection and private concert the group had never experienced before. This is the second time we have held a tour at Dovedale and it will not be the last.

Club Day Run North Hampshire – May Our annual day this year was based at the Esseborne Manor Hotel a scenic run into the Wiltshire and North Hampshire via Marlborough and a delightful coffee stop then back for Sunday lunch. Twenty five cars made a good mixture of XK’s and E-types and we had new couples trying tulip runs for the first time which is always encouraging.

Scottish Highland Tour – May We were based at Cameron House on the southern shore of Loch Lomond in one of the best hotels in Scotland, not only because of it’s 5 star facilities but because of it’s excellent location for exploring by car or just maybe it’s just something to do with the 250 different whiskies behind the bar. We only needed to unpack once as this was our home for the whole tour and our 3 tulip runs took us deep into the surrounding highlands and included Glen Coe, the Trossachs Duke’s Pass and the Argyll Forest and our 10 Loch run. Our Backwater observation trophy competition was an amusing option. This is the third time we have run the tour and we are already being asked when we are doing the next.

Bath & Somerset Tour – June Based at the Bailbrook House Hotel, we started with a guided Bath tour by coach, then a tulip run to Westonbirt Arboretum including a private tour, the Manor House Hotel at Castle Combe lunch for lunch. We also had a run to Wells Cathedral for a private group tour of the cathedral and were invited to display our cars on the front lawn of the Cathedral, then on to Cheddar Gorge for a final run back to the hotel.

Yorkshire Moors and More Tour – July This week long tour was based at two locations – the Talbot Hotel at Malton and Headlam Hall nr Barnard Castle. plus visits to the Bowes Museum, Castle Howard, Beamish Museum, Nunnington Hall, The roads were relatively clear and gave some good opportunities to let the car run free. We had five tulip runs, Wending through the Wolds’ ‘Meandering over the Moors’ ‘Pottering in the Pennines’ ‘Bowling along to Bowes (museum) and the run in between the hotels.

Pentillie Castle Tour – July We have exclusive use of Pentillie Castle an exclusive venue creating a house party atmosphere. This unique tour is considered to be the jewel of our tours, runs went to Dartmoor and the Eden Project / Lost Gardens of Heligan with a coffee stop on the to Bovey Castle Hotel, a rather exclusive venue for a cup of coffee. During our last visit we were privileged to witness the filming of a new TV series – Emilia Fox and Sheila Hancock are joining Dawn French in ‘Delicious’ which is based at Pentillie. We are back again in July 2019.
