Suffolk Discovery Tour 2021

Backwater Classic Tours invites you to discover one of England’s most beautiful and undiscovered counties, travelling its fascinating villages and byways in style and comfort.

Booking for 2021 – a new opportunity
Our original tour (now scheduled for 18th-22nd July 2021) is already fully booked, but such is the strength of demand that we are planning to run a second tour on 25th-29th July 2021.

This second tour also enables us to keep to the same small-numbers format that is one of the special attractions of every Backwater Classic Car Tour. We don’t like large groups! Accordingly, we would advise an early booking to ensure your place in 2021.

NB: If you have already booked a place on the first tour but wish to switch to the second tour for whatever reason, we may be able to accommodate you.

Suffolk Discovery Tour 2021:
Our classic Backwater Tour introduces tourers to an Eastern English county whose bucolic glories have been celebrated by such acknowledged master-artists as Constable, Gainsborough and Munnings.

You will pass through charming medieval towns and villages as well as visiting the world-famous Anglo-Saxon burial site of Sutton Hoo and taking a leisurely boat trip from Dedham Boathouse down the winding River Stour.
All this, in a five-day, four-night tour where the accent is always on luxury, fine food and good companionship.

Where you’ll be staying:
The delightful 4-star Hintlesham Hall Hotel is a wonderful base from which to explore Suffolk. The Hall is a fine, Grade I Listed building offering spacious reception rooms and beautiful bedrooms and suites. Backwater tourers are booked into a superior room as standard. In-house facilities include an ironing and laundry service and a compact spa. The restaurant cuisine is excellent with locally sourced food and many seasonal ingredients coming from the hotel’s own well-stocked herb and vegetable garden.

What’s on offer:
The five-day tour takes in a variety of Suffolk villages, landscapes and coastal towns. Every run has been carefully planned so that every stop on the way will have been selected to maximise your motoring pleasure. We provide clear and easy-to-follow instructions allowing navigators to enjoy the day as much as the drivers.

Tour book: – said to be the most comprehensive such tour guide on offer – ensures that you never miss out on places of scenic or historical interest.

Tulip routes include visits to Flatford Mill (the site of Constable’s ‘The Hay Wain’), Sutton Hoo and the coastal towns of Southwold, Woodbridge and Aldeburgh (famous for its annual festival celebrating the works of Benjamin Britten).
We also visit Thorpeness – home to the Mere and ‘The House in the Clouds’.

The Suffolk Observation Trophy:
This optional, light-hearted competition draws on the fact that Suffolk is renowned for its village signs (there over 375 of them in total). Tourers have to look for the various signs included in their tour book and identify the villages concerned. Each correctly identified sign scores a point and on the last evening, the scores are added up and the winners are awarded The Suffolk Spot-the-Sign Observation Trophy to take home and keep. Lots of good-natured fun and rivalry!
